"Fatherhood is better than TV. You never get bored, you're constantly entertained, and the program changes every 15 minutes." — Tom Hanks

Hollywood Dads

To their children, the men featured in HOLLYWOOD DADS aren't Academy Award-winning actors, world-class athletes, legendary musicians and cultural icons. To them, these men are just "dad." This coveted position holds no audition, but, as evidenced in these intimate photographs, it's the most treasured role these men will ever play.

This extraordinary collection from renowned photographer Joyce Ostin showcases 50 candid portraits of these icons doing what they enjoy most—spending time with their families. Alongside their portraits, the subjects share their advice and experiences as fathers. Kiefer Sutherland says, "Fatherhood has been the greatest challenge of my life, and the most rewarding." Lenny Kravitz says, "Being a father gives your life true purpose and meaning. All of your senses and emotions come into play, demonstrating God's perfect design." And Jim Belushi says, "Being a dad is the hardest and best thing I've ever done. It kicks ass—mainly my own."

Getting fifty men to return your calls is one thing. It's quite another when those men include Steven Spielberg, Sidney Poitier, and Robin Williams. But the subject matter and the opportunity to contribute to a worthy cause proved to be a worthy catalyst.

"Being the author of the best-seller Hollywood Moms, was my calling card," says Ostin. "I asked these men to participate in this book, stating that part of the proceeds would go towards finding a cure for cancer. The men were very willing to participate, knowing they were going to make a difference."

When asked to recall her most memorable shoots, Ostin has a hard time choosing just one. "Brendan Fraser was fun to shoot," she says. "He has three small children who all piled in bed on top of him. The kids were climbing all over him (except for Leland, the two-week-old), and he just flowed with it all. He looked as though he was meant to play this role."

Art directing the shoots was quite another thing. "Although he is so down-to-earth, I was still nervous to tell Steven Spielberg what to do," she says. "How could I tell the world's biggest director where to stand for the best lighting?"

And in some cases, the photo shoots provided Ostin the opportunity to bond with her subjects. "My shoot with surfer Laird Hamilton was really memorable," she says. "It was right after my mother-in-law, Evelyn, passed away. Laird was so spiritual and cosmic and open to hearing me talk about her. I knew this gorgeous, unbelievable athlete was truly a star with a huge heart. When he put his daughter in his hands, the look of love and fun he was having was striking. I thank him for being so open at such a vulnerable time in my life."

In this exclusive excerpt, see the photos from the shoots with Dustin Hoffman, Flea, Lionel Richie, and Sugar Ray Leonard.
