Maybe your cat likes to nap in the crook of your arm. Or paw you awake in the morning. Maybe it's that your pet knows how to tell you just where to scratch. Or it might be the comfort of your pet choosing to follow you from room to room during the day. CAT GETTING OUT OF A BAG is a delightful tribute to the sweet everyday pleasures of owning a cherished pet. In a series of drawings, comic artist and graphic novelist Jeffrey Brown chronicles the joys of living with his cat Misty when he was a boy. What's most charming about this book is that many cat lovers will find Misty familiar. The simple pleasures of watching a sleepy cat migrate with a sunbeam cast across the floor on a lazy afternoon. Completing a puzzle with a cat dozing next to you. The comedy of trying to discipline a naughty cat who responds by swatting playfully at your fingers. "I've always loved cats, and one thing I wanted to do was write a tribute to my cat Misty, who was one of my best friends growing up," says Brown. "I also wanted to experiment with the comics form a little, writing from a perspective other than a personal human one." Brown has been featured in McSweeney's and on NPR's This American Life, and even created a short animated video for the band Death Cab for Cutie. "As a child I always dreamed of growing up to be a cartoonist, only to give up comics completely when I went to college, eventually settling on a goal of becoming a painter," says Brown. "I realized though that the medium of comics offered a unique method of expression beyond what either painting or writing could. Comics is also a medium somehow perfectly suited for writing about cats, as can be seen in the long history of cats in comics, from Krazy Kat to Garfield to Mutts."
